Tum Bin 2 is Anubhav Sinha’s rehash of his first film for the new audience. Newcomer Aashim Gulati has a limited role and his uncanny resemblance to Sidharth Malhotra is an interesting angle. The actress adds beauty to the exotic locales and fancy frames but the big dramatic punch is missing. She sways between the two men in her life and never really gets a handle on her feelings nor on her choices. Neha Sharma is hot and cold in a role that’s not really flattering, especially with logic. He’s generous with his philosophy and Aditya gets the restraint of his character bang on. He’s that oddly attractive combination of a young man with detached Sufi type values. The one performance that makes a mark is by Aditya Seal. This track has been used generously throughout the film and it is this song and it’s deeply melodious nature that makes Tum Bin 2 emotional. But above the efforts of Tiwari and Nikhil-Vinay it is the ghazal singing of late Jagjit Singh and Rekha Bhardwaj in Teri fariyad that infuses a real spirit in the film. Like Aashiqui 2, the music makes a solid and lasting impact on the film.
Ankit Tiwari’s songs, Nikhil-Vinay’s compositions are good. But the masterstroke of the film is its music. The young and pleasant looking cast of Aditya Seal, Neha Sharma and Aashim Gulati add to the eye candy. The hilly locates of UK combined with the exotic mountain locations of Europe make Tum Bin 2 a very pretty film to look at. Director Anubhav Sinha mounts the film in a beautiful manner. The effort instead is put into the presentation of the film. But largely Tum Bin 2 keeps its premise simple. The end has been updated a bit in the sequel and it’s not all bad. In all honesty movies like Aradhana and Kabhi Kabhie had so much more dramatic depth within the same kind of romantic formula more than four decades ago.

To be honest, if you’ve ever watched any Balaji serial or romantic Hindi movie from the ’80s and/or ’90s the entire conflict of Tum Bin 2 will feel a bit tiring. Here’s when the very predictable development kicks in and Amar emerges alive, adding the stale masala to this oft cooked Indian cinematic curry. Before you know it, Shekhar’s charm hits Taran on the rebound and she falls in love again. Then one fine day, Amar’s dad (Kanwaljit Singh) introduces Taran to Shekhar (Aditya Seal). The young girl spends the next 6 months moping and sulking, remembering the intense love that she felt for her soul mate Amar. Taran reluctantly returns to her boutique life in England. Amar meets with a skiing accident and is lost in the cold slopes.

The perfect young couple, on the threshold of marriage, are torn apart due to a tragedy. Nonetheless, it’s also a near replica of the plot of Tum Bin (2001), Anubhav Sinha’s first film. The basic plot is so old that you’ll barely even find it soap operas. For enthusiasts of young, flaky romance Tum Bin 2 has all the right flavours. Good music can still trump mediocre storytelling. The quintessential love triangle still has entertainment value. Even though the story feels all too familiar, the updated packaging adds a new appeal. Anubhav Sinha’s Tum Bin 2 is an example of selling an age old romantic story with young actors and fancy locations. Sometimes old wine can be sold in a new package.
